K53 day-of-test checklist

What to take with you on K53 test day so nothing goes wrong before you even get into the car.

DLTC turnaways for document or vehicle issues happen every day. This checklist covers everything you need so you don't join that group.

The night before the test, go through this list with the physical items in front of you. Don't rely on memory on the morning.

Documents

  • Original SA ID or smart card (not a certified copy)
  • Your learner's licence -- original, not a copy, and still within its 24-month validity period
  • Booking confirmation from NaTIS (printed or screenshot on your phone)
  • Eye-test certificate from an optometrist, or confirm your DLTC does on-the-day eye tests

The vehicle

If you're using your driving school's car, they handle this. If you're using your own car:

  • Valid licence disc (not expired -- check the date on the disc, not on memory)
  • All lights working: headlights, brake lights, indicators front and rear, reverse light
  • Both side mirrors and interior mirror in place and adjustable
  • Handbrake holds on a slope
  • Working hooter
  • Seatbelts for driver and front passenger operational
  • No cracked windscreen in the driver's line of sight
  • Tyres with legal tread depth

The DLTC inspector checks the vehicle before the yard test. A failed vehicle check forfeits the slot.

On the day

Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment. DLTC administration takes time -- they capture your details, check your documents, and process payment if you haven't paid online. If you arrive at your slot time, you're already late.

Wear closed-toe shoes. Some DLTCs formally enforce this; others will comment if you're wearing sandals. The clutch pedal is harder to control precisely in open footwear.

Bring water. DLTC waiting areas can be crowded and warm. You may wait 1 to 3 hours past your appointment before being called.

After the test

If you pass: you receive a temporary licence before you leave. The permanent card follows in 4 to 10 weeks.

If you fail: get the marking sheet from the examiner, read it carefully, and rebook. DLTC slots fill quickly -- do it the same day if you can. See the K53 yard test guide and the road test guide to target what failed. Find your nearest DLTC to check availability.

Step-by-step

  1. 1. Documents

Original ID. Valid learner's licence (within 24-month validity). Booking confirmation.

  2. 2. Eye-test certificate

From a registered optometrist, or done at the DLTC on the day -- confirm with your DLTC in advance.

  3. 3. Test fee proof

Payment receipt for the test fee, paid in advance via NaTIS or on arrival -- check with your DLTC which they require.

  4. 4. Vehicle

Valid licence disc. Roadworthy. Two functioning mirrors. Working indicators, brake lights, hooter. Handbrake operational.

  5. 5. Clothing

Closed-toe shoes. Some DLTCs refuse open footwear for clutch-control tests. Comfortable clothing for a 2-hour wait.

  6. 6. Arrive early

At least 30 minutes before your slot. DLTC processing takes time. If you miss the call, you miss the slot.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing a copy of the learner's licence instead of the original
  • Expired licence disc on the test vehicle
  • A broken indicator or rear-view mirror
  • Forgetting the booking confirmation number
  • Arriving on time rather than 30 minutes early
