What you can do with a learner's licence

  • Drive on public roads, but only with a licenced driver (who holds the relevant code) in the front passenger seat
  • L-plates are not legally required in South Africa (unlike the UK), though many instructors use them as a courtesy
  • You may drive at night - there is no time restriction on learner drivers in South African law
  • You may not carry passengers for reward

How long is a learner's licence valid?

24 months from the date of issue. If you don't pass the K53 in that time, you must retake the learner's test before you can book again.
