Miss a document on test day and you lose your slot. No grace period, no exceptions. The list below covers every Code B driver's test.
Documents you must bring
- Valid learner's licence. The original document, not a copy. It must still be within its 24-month validity period on the date of the test.
- South African ID book or green barcoded ID / smart ID card. Matches the name on your learner's licence. A passport works for South African citizens and foreign nationals with valid documentation, but confirm with your specific DLTC beforehand.
- Proof of booking / appointment confirmation. The NATIS system should have your booking, but having the printed or screenshot confirmation avoids disputes.
For the test vehicle
If you're using your driving school's vehicle, your school handles this. If you're using your own car:
- Valid licence disc (not expired)
- Roadworthy condition: all lights working, no cracked windscreen blocking line of sight, tyres above the legal minimum tread depth
- Functioning handbrake (the inspector will test it)
- Working horn
- Clean windscreen
- Seatbelts for driver and front passenger in working order
The DLTC inspector will check the vehicle before the yard test starts. If anything fails, the test stops.
Practical items for the day
- Comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Sandals or slip-ons make clutch control harder (for manual), and some DLTCs will refuse to start the test if you're wearing open footwear.
- Glasses or contact lenses if your licence requires them. This is legally mandated. Missing this fails you automatically.
- Water. DLTC waiting areas can be crowded and hot. Wait times can run 1–3 hours beyond your appointment.
- Something to occupy the wait. Early morning slots are most common; arrive 30 minutes early and expect to sit.
Things people forget
- ID must match the learner's licence exactly. A name discrepancy (nickname on ID, full name on licence) can cause complications. Check before test day.
- The learner's licence must be the original. DLTCs do not accept photocopies.
- Your school's car may have restrictions. If you've been learning in an automatic, you'll be tested in an automatic, and your licence will carry an automatic restriction. If you want a full (manual) licence, you must test in a manual.
On test day: what to do
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
- Check in at the testing counter. They'll capture your details in NATIS.
- Wait to be called for the vehicle inspection.
- Yard test first (pre-trip inspection + manoeuvres).
- Road test second.
Both parts happen on the same day at most DLTCs. If you pass both, you receive your temporary licence before you leave.
If you fail
Rebook immediately. DLTC slots fill up fast. Don't go home and think about it for a week. The sooner you're in the queue, the sooner you test again.
Read our guide on what to do if you fail, and check our K53 preparation hub to work on the specific areas where you dropped marks.
Frequently asked
- Can I do the K53 test in my own car?
- Yes. The vehicle must be roadworthy, have valid licence plates, a valid licence disc, functioning lights, a working handbrake, and a foot brake. If the car fails the DLTC's pre-test inspection, the test will not proceed.
- Do I need to bring my own test vehicle?
- Most driving schools use their own vehicles for the test, which removes the vehicle-inspection risk from you. If you're going without a school, bring your own car and confirm it meets all requirements.
- What happens if I forget a document?
- You will be turned away and lose your test slot. There is no grace period for missing documents. NATIS cannot proceed without the full set.
- Can I wear glasses or a hearing aid to the test?
- Yes. If your learner's licence lists a restriction for glasses or a hearing aid, you must wear them or you will fail automatically.
