The moment you pass the K53, the process of getting your physical driver's licence card begins. Here's the exact sequence.

Step 1: Temporary licence (on the day)

Before you leave the DLTC on the day you pass, the examiner processes your results in NaTIS and prints a temporary driver's licence. This is a printed/stamped document - not a card.

The temporary licence is a fully valid driver's licence. It has the same legal status as the card. You can use it to:

  • Drive legally on all South African roads
  • Show to traffic officers if stopped
  • Rent a vehicle (most car hire companies accept it)
  • Apply for certain jobs requiring a licence

Keep it with you every time you drive. Don't leave it at home.

How long is the temporary licence valid?

The temporary licence is valid for a set period - typically 6 months from the date of issue. The exact validity period is printed on the document. You must collect your permanent card before it expires.

Step 2: The permanent card

After you pass, the DLTC submits your data to the card production centre. A South African driver's licence card is a smart card (similar to a bank card) with an embedded chip and your photo, biometrics, and licence details.

Production and delivery typically takes 4–10 weeks. Processing times are published on the Department of Transport website and vary by province.

Step 3: Collecting the card

Cards are either:

  • Posted to the address on your NaTIS record, or
  • Held at the DLTC for collection

Your DLTC will tell you which process they follow. If it's collection-based, check back after 4 weeks. If it's posted and 8 weeks have passed without arrival, visit the DLTC.

What to do if the card is delayed

  1. Visit the DLTC where you passed
  2. Ask them to check the card status on NaTIS (takes 5 minutes)
  3. Possible outcomes:

- Card is ready and waiting for collection - Card is in production - wait another 2 weeks - Data error - DLTC can resubmit - Card was returned to sender (wrong address)

Do not let your temporary licence expire before the card arrives. If it does, return to the DLTC for a new temporary licence with the updated expiry date. Bring your original documents.

The card itself

The South African driver's licence card contains:

  • Your name and ID number
  • Photograph
  • Licence code(s) you're entitled to drive
  • Any restrictions (e.g. "corrective lenses must be worn" or "automatic vehicle only")
  • An expiry date - cards are valid for 5 years

Licence renewal

Your card expires 5 years after issue. You don't need to retest - you just renew. See our renewal guide for the process.

Lost temporary licence

If you lose the temporary licence before the card arrives, return to the DLTC. They can reprint or reissue a temporary licence using your NaTIS record.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to get a driver's licence card?
Typically 4–8 weeks from the date you passed. Processing times vary by province and DLTC. Gauteng and Western Cape are often slower due to volume.
Can I drive while waiting for my card?
Yes. Your temporary licence (issued at the DLTC on the day you pass) is a fully legal driver's licence for the duration of its validity. Keep it with you when driving.
What if my card still hasn't arrived after 8 weeks?
Visit the DLTC where you tested and ask them to check the status on NaTIS. The card may be ready for collection if it wasn't sent via post, or there may be a processing issue.
Does my licence card expire?
Yes. Driver's licence cards expire after 5 years. You must renew before or shortly after the expiry date. See our guide on renewing your licence.
