If your driver's licence card is lost, stolen, or seriously damaged, follow these steps:
- Report it at SAPS. Open a case if it was stolen, or get a sworn affidavit if just lost. The affidavit is free; the SAPS officer signs it on the spot.
- Go to any DLTC. You don't have to use the centre that originally issued the card.
- Take with you: SAPS affidavit, ID document, two passport photos, proof of residence, and the duplicate fee (around R100).
- Apply for a Temporary Driver's Licence (TDL) at the same visit. The TDL is valid for 6 months and lets you drive legally while waiting for the new card.
- Wait. The new card is delivered to the DLTC. Most provinces deliver in 4-6 weeks. Some (Western Cape, Free State) are faster.
Damaged card
Same process, except SAPS affidavit isn't required, bring the damaged card and explain at the DLTC.
While you wait
Carry your TDL plus ID. If pulled over, the TDL acts as your licence.
Process your replacement at your nearest DLTC.
