K53 vehicle requirements: what your test car must have

Your K53 test vehicle must meet specific requirements. Here's the checklist for Code B, and what gets you turned away at the DLTC.

Your K53 test vehicle must meet specific requirements before the examiner will even start.

Code B requirements

  • Valid current licence disc (not expired)
  • Roadworthy certificate (if older than 5 years)
  • Two functioning rear-view mirrors (interior + at least one exterior)
  • Working indicators (front and rear, both sides)
  • Working brake lights
  • Working hooter
  • Working hazard lights
  • Two functioning seatbelts (driver and front passenger minimum)
  • No major bodywork damage
  • Tyres with legal tread depth (≥1 mm across the full width)
  • Functioning handbrake
  • Clean and presentable

Code EB additionally

  • Functioning trailer with working lights and electrical connection
  • Trailer must be loaded to specification

Code C / C1 additionally

  • Operational tachograph (if required for the vehicle class)
  • Working air brakes (if applicable)
  • Reflective tape on rear

What happens if your car fails

The examiner refuses to start the test. You forfeit the test slot. Some DLTCs will let you reschedule without a new fee if you can fix the issue within 30 days. Many won't.

Bring backups

If using your own car: tested spare bulbs in a clear bag, current licence disc copy, recent roadworthy certificate. Examiners ask.
