Driving school package vs pay-per-lesson

Most driving schools push 10 or 15-lesson packages. Are they actually better value than paying per lesson?

Most driving schools push 10 or 15-lesson packages. The discount is real — usually 10-20%. The question is whether you'll use all the lessons.

The package case

  • Lock in a price
  • Schedule across multiple weeks
  • Often includes a K53 mock test or booking help

The pay-per-lesson case

  • No commitment — easy to switch schools if it's not working
  • No lost money if you progress faster than expected
  • Easier to compare schools (just book one lesson at each, see who's best)

The honest middle path

Book 3-5 lessons individually first. If the instructor is good and the vehicle is fine, upgrade to a 10-lesson package crediting what you've already paid. Most reputable schools allow this.

Avoid

  • 20-lesson packages "with retest insurance" priced at R8,000+ — usually padded
  • Schools that won't sell single lessons at all
  • Cash-only "discount" packages with no refund policy

Practical recommendation

If you have prior experience (rode shotgun for parents, did a learner's permit), start with 3-5 single lessons. If you've never driven, book a 10-lesson package after a 1-lesson trial.

Frequently asked

What's the typical package discount?
10-lesson packages typically save 10-15% vs single-lesson rate. 15-lesson packages save 15-20%.
What happens if I cancel mid-package?
It depends on the school. Most refund unused lessons at the single-lesson rate, which usually cancels out the discount.
