Your South African driver's licence card expires every 5 years. The licence (your legal authority to drive) doesn't expire, but the card is what you have to produce when stopped, so the practical effect is the same.
Where to find your expiry date
Look at the front of the card, lower right corner. The "Valid" field shows the date your card stops being valid.
Renewing on time
Apply at any DLTC up to 6 months before the expiry date. Standard documents (ID, current card, photos, proof of residence, fee).
Renewing late
No re-test is required regardless of how long the card has been expired. South African law does not require you to re-sit the learner's or K53 test due to card expiry. Bring the same renewal documents and process it at any DLTC. Do not drive on an expired card in the meantime — that is a traffic offence.
Driving on an expired card
It's a traffic offence. R250 – R1,500 fine in most provinces, plus the officer can impound the vehicle. Renew before the date.
Tip
Set a calendar reminder for 6 months before your expiry date. DLTCs are slow: the renewal can take 6-8 weeks from application to card delivery.
Before it expires, book your renewal at a DLTC near you.
